Huruf Hiragana merupakan sebuah bentuk penyederhanaan dari huruf kanji yang telah digunakan Tiongkok pada abad ke-5. Pada awal perkembangannya, huruf Hiragana tidak langsung bisa diterima oleh Jepang karena kaum elit Jepang pada masa itu menolak untuk menggunakan huruf Hiragana dan hanya mau menggunakan huruf kanji saja.
